Why Chromebooks?

Chromebooks are widely used by schools and there are many reasons they are selected and utilized. As I have been teaching, these are the primary sources of technology in my classroom. I haven’t really imagined the reasons why it is used other than there was probably a huge bulk discount ! Here are a few of the highlights mentioned by Clark.

* Easier to Manage than a regular laptop computer

More durable

* Long Battery Life, and a short charging time.

* Contribute to creating equality and democratizing education

* Simpler operating system : Google Drive, which easily stores and shares information instantly.

* Can be used offline for students who do not have home access to the internet.

* Provides authentic collaboration opportunities for group work and communication with the teacher.

So, what is the “infused classroom”?

The word “infused” comes from the medical term “infusion”: to combine two chemicals to produce something brand new. The pictograph below shows the many benefits of the infused classroom. The 12 parts of an infused classroom represented in each part of the puzzle.

Recently I’ve heard the word “infusion” used to describe alcoholic drinks that are transformed in flavor by the incorporation of an herb or spice, I have also heard the term used for balsamic vinegars, and even candles.

Plainly, it means to transform one thing into another by incorporating another substance. In this case, the classroom is infused with technology to form a new way of learning for a new type of student: Generation Z.

Think about what it means to be an infused student…

In the photo below, observe all the ways a student can utilize a Chromebook to achieve multiple forms of learning and achieve a deeper form of learning at the same time.

Looking at the chart above you can see all the benefits incorporating technology can afford to inclusivity. There are many applications offered by Clark in this book to help reach the pinnacle of a truly infused classroom.

Think about these questions:

In what ways has your classroom been transformed by technology?

In what ways can teachers help to make sure all students have opinions that are heard?
